The Elements and the Principles
The ELEMENTS are what Art is composed from--including line, shape, form, value, color, space and texture. The elements working in a composition will illustrate the PRINCIPLES of design in some fashion or another.

Elements of Design
Line – mark made by a moving point; has direction and length
Shape – area defined by line or changes in value and/or color
Space – the internal measurable distance between points or images
Light – the radiant energy that makes things visible
Value – relative lightness or darkness
Color – varying wavelengths of the sun’s electromagnetic energy;
having the
attributes
(qualities/characteristics) of hue, value and intensity
hue – pure color with nothing added
value – relative lightness or darkness
1- shade – adding black to a color (hue)
2- tint – adding white to a color (hue)
3- tone – adding grey to a color (hue)
intensity (saturation) – purity or brightness of a color; adding
any hue
changes (lowers) its intensity
Texture – tactile qualities of a surface; physical or implied
Principles of Design
Unity –
the appearance of similarity, consistency, or oneness; various elementsthat appear as part of a single form
Variety-diversity
in color, shape, use of line, texture, direction, and orientation within the
composition. This is what generates interest
Balance – the achievement of equilibrium
Emphasis (focus/focal point) – major area of attention
Direction – paths for the eye to follow; provided by actual or
implied lines
Contrast – juxtaposition of strongly dissimilar elements; like
light and dark, or
organic
and geometric
organic - natural; has curves
geometric
– hard edged; straight edges
Repetition – the use of the same visual effect a number of times in
the same
composition
Rhythm – the regular or ordered repetition of dominant and
subordinate elements
or
units within a design or composition
Scale – the size, or apparent size, of an object seen in
relation to other objects, people, or it’s environment
Proportion – the size relationships of parts to a whole and to one
another
